Best Strategies for Defeating Monsters
Bait and Punish
Most monsters have a wind-up animation before they attack. That's your window. Walk just close enough to trigger their attack, then step back immediately. Their swing or lunge misses you completely. Then you walk back in and hit them while they're recovering. I used this on the big axe-wielding skeletons. They hit hard but slow. Bait, dodge, and punish. Works every time.
Use the Environment Against Them
Spikes are your enemy, but they can also be your weapon. I found a section with a flying bat monster and a pit of spikes below. Instead of jumping up to fight it, I stood under the spikes. The bat dove at me, missed, and hit the spikes instead. Instant kill. No effort. Look for holes, fire pits, and moving traps. Lure monsters into them. The game won't teach you this. You just have to notice it yourself.
Never Fight More Than One at a Time
This sounds obvious, but the game loves to throw two or three monsters in the same room. If you rush in, enemies surround you and stun-lock you to death. Pull one monster back to a safe area using your movement. Kill it alone. Then go for the next one. Patience wins here, not aggression. There's a room with two goblins and an archer. I kept dying until I realized the archer doesn't move. I killed the goblins one by one in the hallway, then walked up to the archer and finished it off. Easy.
